What is Aloe Vera ? What is Aloe Vera ?

Aloe is a plant of dry sandy places and hillsides, distinguished by its fleshy, cactus-like appearance, inhabiting primarily warm dry climate. Aloe is a stemless or very short stemmed plant, growing 80-100cm tall.It belongs to the lily family. There are over 250 species of aloe in the world mostly native to Africa. Aloe plants are semi-tropical succulent plants grown in warm tropical areas. They have thick tapered spiny leaves which grow from short stalk near ground level. Aloe plants contains 95% water, are extremely frost tender, therefore grows in warm climates, in bright sunlight, or in light shade. They cannot survive freezing temperatures. It is in leaf all year, in flower from May to June. Of the 250 species of Aloe, only four are recognized as being of nutritional value to humans and animals. Aloe barbadensis miller (Aloe Vera species) is the top of these four.

Aloe vera basically refers to the garden aloe, a popular houseplant, from that of other species like that of A. maculata which is much larger and a more vigorous plant that has become naturalized in the eastern and southern parts of the continent. Aloe Barbidensis is perhaps the best known for its medicinal properties and is cultivated commercially for use in a myriad of cosmetic products and in treating digestive disorders. Aloe Vera, is the most potent and nutritious - with only mature plants bearing the greatest benefits. Aloe vera has a long history of use as a medicinal plant, with written record going back to 1750 BC.

Constituents of Aloe Vera
The part of the plant used for medicinal purposes is the leaf. Aloe vera leaf contains more than 200 different constituents. The juice contains, on average, more than 99% water. The relative quantities of the aloe constituents may be quite small (the total solid fraction varies from 0.5 to 1.5%), but most researchers claim that the effects that are observed may be due to the synergistic actions of the known ingredients. Some constituents are:
• Anthraquinones
• Amino acids
• Approximately 96% water
• Enzymes
• Sterols
• Glycoproteins (protein-carbohydrate compounds that speed the healing process by stopping pain and inflammation)
• Minerals
• Vitamins
• Polysaccharides

Amino Acids: Aloe provides the 8 essential amino acids that the human body cannot manufacture required for the production of muscle tissue etc.

Anthraquinones: Eg, Aloe emodin, Aloetic Acid, Aloin, Anthracine, Antranol, Barbaloin, Chrysophanic Acid, in relatively small concentrations, traditionally known as laxatives, they aid absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract. They also have pain killng effects.

Enzymes: They provide enzymes like Alkaline Phosphatase, Amylase, Carboxypeptidase, Catalase, Cellulase, Lipase, Peroxidase which aid digestion by breaking down fat and sugars.

Minerals: Eg, Calcium, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, are essential for good health as they are required for the proper functioning of various enzyme systems in different metabolic pathways.

Sterols: Aloe vera provides like steroids: Cholesterol, Campesterol, Lupeol, ß Sitosterol, which are anti-inflammatory agents, also possesses antiseptic and analgesic properties.

Sugars: Aloe Vera contains both mono and polysaccharides, but the most important are the mucopolysaccharides. These sugars are ingested whole from the gut, not broken down like other sugars, and appear in the bloodstream in exactly the same form, where exert their their immuno- modulation effect. Eg, Acemannan (mucopolysaccharide) and other polysaccharides boost T-lymphocyte cells which help promote skin healing and neutralize many of the enzymes responsible for damaging the mucosal wall. They hold the building blocks of the immune system together, aiding macrophages and other components of immune response to "recognize" invasive agents. Mucopolysaccharides are found in every single cell in the body. The human body stops manufacturing its own mucopolysaccharides around puberty and from then on must rely on outside sources. Monosaccharides: glucose & fructose, have anti-inflammatory action. Lignin is a cellulose based substance, which is thought to provide penetrating power in Aloe vera skin preparations and may act as a carrier for other components.

Vitamins: It is rich in all vitamins excluding Vitamin D, especially the antioxidant Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E and even contains a trace of vitamin B12, one of the very few plant sources of this vitamin.

Glycoproteins: A glycoprotein (14 kDa) isolated from Aloe vera gel showed radical scavenging activity and wound-healing effect of aloe vera via cell proliferation and migration.

Some other compounds include
• Prostaglandins (gamma-linoleic acid....prostaglandin 1 series) have favorable effects on inflammation, allergy, platelet aggregation, wound healing.
• Hormones They provide hormones like Auxins & Gibberellins, which has wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects.

• Salicylic Acid It is an aspirin- like compound possessing anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
• Saponins These soapy substances are glycosides, having antiseptic properties. They act as powerful anti-microbials against bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast.

Based on the numerous constituents of aloe, it has been used as a remedy for

• Bacterial, Viral, Fungal and Parasitic Conditions- Aloe has been widely used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to have direct antiviral activity against HIV1( AIDS), effective against feline leukemia, influenza, and measles, relieves symptoms of fungal, yeast and bacterial infections.

• Blood Conditions- Aids in blood circulation, helps lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes ( non-insulin dependent diabetes).

• Cardiovascular Conditions- Aloe is known to relieve hypertension.

• Female Conditions- Aloe is used to treat menstrual cramps, and suppressed menses.

• Gastrointestinal Conditions- Aloe is widely used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders like, constipation, colitis, dyspepsia, relieves symptoms of indigestion, naturally alkalizes digestive juices to prevent over-acidity, relieves nausea . It is also known to assist kidney function .

• Immune System Conditions- Aloe has immune stimulating actions, functions in the enhancement of macrophage activity, release of immune system potentiators, T cell function, interferon production.

• Inflammatory Conditions- Aloe is known to provide relief for arthritis.

• Liver Conditions- Aloe assists gall bladder and liver functions and is used to treat hypercholesterolemia( increased blood cholesterol)

Aloe is also well known for its wound healing properties. They stimulate fibroblast and connective tissue formation, promoting wound repair and epidermal growth. Aloe gel obtained from within the leaf makes an excellent treatment for wounds, burns and other skin disorders, placing a protective coat over the affected area. Aloe Vera Gel has gained respect as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic product, because it accelerates the rate of healing, decreases swelling and redness, increases the availability of oxygen to the skin, naturally balances the pH of the skin. Aloe gel is useful for treating abrasions, acne, boils, burns, cuts and scratches, edema, inflamed eyes, radiation burns, warts, wrinkles.

Side effects from correctly administered Aloe usage are thought to be rare. Overdose/long term usage can cause loss of electrolytes and fluid imbalance, muscular weakness, especially with concurrent use of diuretics, and corticosteroids, severe diarrhoea, kidney damage, spontaneous abortion or premature birth if taken during late pregnancy.
