What is Meniscus ?

Aloe Meniscus is the cartilage which is c-shaped and located at the peripheral part of the knee joints. Meniscus is cushioned between the cartilage surfaces of the bone and distributes weight and improves the stability of joints. It also allows the bones to smoothly glide against each other and ensures that there is no harm caused to the bone.

What happens in case of a meniscus tear ?
Meniscus tear is when the cartilage gets torn when the knee joint is bent and the knee gets twisted. It can happen due to two reasons- trauma which is seen commonly in athletes and degenerative processes which is seen in older patients whose cartilage is more brittle. It can also accompany injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament and the medical collateral ligament.

Symptoms of ligament tear
The most common symptoms of meniscus tear are pain and swelling. People also complain about joint locking or inability to straighten the joint. The motion of the knee can be temporarily impinged due to meniscus tear.

Diagnosis of meniscus tear
If you approach a doctor with a case of meniscus tear, you will go through a physical examination to determine the level of tear. The two common tests that are administered are X-Rays and MRI. X-Rays help in determining the degenerative or arthritic changes to the knee joint. MRI helps to visualize and the meniscus. All meniscus tear do not require surgery.

Cosmetic Treatment of meniscus
In the case of a minor knee pain the initial first aid can be ice packs, rest and immobilization. The timely administration of these simple aids can help reduce pain and swelling to a large extent. It is left to the medical expert to decide whether the patient requires a surgery or not. It is essential only when it becomes symptomatic or starts interfering with daily life. In some, it can be delayed or avoided altogether. There are cases where people are able to lead normal lives despite a meniscus tear.

The Two common ways of surgery are
Meniscus repair – This is a surgical procedure which attempts to restore the normal anatomy of the knee. This procedure is beneficial in the long run. However the recovery takes longer and is not always possible because of a limited blood supply to the meniscus.

Meniscectomy – This is more common than meniscus repair. In this procedure through which the torn portion of the meniscus is removed. This is particularly effective in cases where the tear cannot be treated because of the tears are frayed or that they cannot be sutured together. Here the meniscectomy helps to remove the damaged portions of the meniscus. The patient recovers faster but the patient should be warned of trouble shootings which might arise because of the absence of normal meniscus.
