What is Hot Dog & Where it Originated ?

What is a Hot Dog ?
Hot dog is one of the most common variants of sausages eaten by people around the world especially in United States and Germany. What makes the hot dog the most favored sausage is the fact that it is soft with an even texture and a flavor that is moister and hence more appealing to the taste buds as compared to its other cousins in the sausage family? Most hot dogs are eaten as finger food. It is first roasted and placed hot in a soft sliced bun usually of the same size and shape as the sausage itself. Sometimes extra toppings and condiments are also used.

Where did Hot dogs originate ?
Hot dogs have its roots in Germany where in the city of Frankfurt the first variants of hot dogs came into existence sometime around the year 1484. With the discovery of the new world and the immigration of German workers to America hot dogs found a new home there. But during those early days it was not referred to as a hot dog. Most people called them as Dachshund sausages.

How did Hot Dogs get their name ?
There is an interesting story as to how hot dogs got its name. In the polo grounds of New York City vendors used to sell hot dogs shouting "Get your Dachshund sausages while they're red hot!” Inspired by this sports cartoonist Ted Dorgan sketched a cartoon of a barking Daschund sausage nestled in warm buns. However Ted faced a rather silly problem. He was not sure about the spelling of dachshund, so he simply wrote “hot dog”. The cartoon soon became a revelation and every one around started using the term hot dog for dachshund sausages.

Ingredients used
Most of the hot dogs that you see around today are made up of lean cuts of beef and pork blended with seasonings and different variants of spices. The meat that is used for making hot dogs need to qualify certain specific standards of the united states department of agriculture. The department specifies, “All meats used in hot dogs must be listed in order of predominance”. Chefs around the world beside preparing the regular form of hot dogs have also come up with interesting new variants like the cheese flavored hot dog.

What makes the hot dog special is the fact that it can be customized to adhere to your own personal tastes while at the same time not loosing its basic essence. This is why hot dogs around the world taste very different from each other. The hot dog that you eat at your neighborhood store might taste very different from the one you ate at the Florida beach while on a holiday. Every hot dog brings with it a new element and this is what makes it special. The main difference in taste comes form the kind of condiments used .The most common condiments used include mustard, ketchup, chili, sauerkraut, cole slaw, pickle relish and chopped onion. Some other products also included are mayonnaise. Chopped lettuce, tomato, pickle, cheese, potato sticks and hot pepper. The kind of condiments used and the proportion used gives each and every hot dog an individual taste. This is why you never get bored eating a hot dog as every experience is a new experience.
