What is Mincemeat ?
Mincemeat is a spiced mixture of
finely chopped apples, raisins, spices, meat, and sometimes rum
or brandy, used especially as a pie filling.
Origin
of the word ‘Mincemeat’
The word mince in mincemeat comes from the Latin word ‘minutia’
meaning “something small”. The word mincemeat is an adaptation
of an earlier term minced meat meaning “ meat chopped into small
pieces”. A common slang “ to make mincemeat of “ (a person or an
argument) means to destroy utterly.
History of Mincemeat
Mincemeat initially began as a way to preserve food. Probably it
was canned or stored in large batches. It began to be called
mincemeat from the mincing or fine cutting of the ingredients,
meat and fruit. The first mincemeat factory was in Port Byron,
New York, using a recipe patented by Dr. Julius Allen. His
patent was voided in 1895.
