What is the case of mucus build up in the back of the throat
that makes you feel like you have to swallow constantly ?
What is
Phlegm (mucus)?
Phlegm is the mucus that is secreted in the respiratory passage.
Phlegm may result from conditions like allergies, smoking,
sinusitis, postnatal drip, chronic bronchitis, or sometimes
nasal cancer. It commonly affects the lungs, mouth and throat.
How does mucus (phlegm) build up in
the throat?
The linings of the throat and nasal passages and sinuses have a
moist surface. This is known as the mucous membrane. The mucous
membranes have tiny glands which secrete mucus (phlegm). This
helps to the mucous membrane remain moist. The function of the
mucous membrane is to keep the air you breathe warm and to
prevent infection.
In case the mucous membrane gets irritated, which might be
termed as an “allergy,” then it is likely to produce more mucus
than usual. It is also possible that mucus tends to collect in
the throat overnight. This could be the result of wrong method
of breathing while sleeping, that is, breathing through the
mouth instead of the nose.
