Zinc - important functions and potential
Soil losses and losses in food processing causes Zinc deficiency
in skin and organs and this zinc deficiency can produce a
variety of symptoms in our body. Zinc is considered necessary in
almost more than 100 enzymes and is mostly involved in almost
all body functions than any other mineral. Zinc is important in
normal growth and development of organs, the maintenance of body
tissues, sexual function, the immune system, and detoxification
of chemicals and metabolic irritants.
Human body’s Carbohydrate metabolism is influenced by zinc, and
zinc is also needed in the synthesis of DNA, which aids human
body's healing process. Only because of this reason zinc is used
for healing wounds after surgery or burns. Zinc helps to heal
wounds in many male prostate problems, in skin diseases,

and in many other difficulties.
About 2-2.5 grams of Zinc is found in the human body. Among the
minerals present in trace amount, zinc comes in the second place
next to the concentration of iron. The average amount of Zinc
present in human body is nearly 33 ppm and the concentration of
iron is 60 ppm. Some minerals and vitamins will be lost while
cooking, the power of zinc will be lost in the form of water. To
avoid the loss of minerals, the cooking liquids, especially from
vegetables, should be consumed as well. When foods are
processed, more amount of zinc will be lost, along with other
minerals like manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and B vitamins.
In general, after processing foods, traces of iron and sometimes
vitamins B1 and B2 are added back. Addition of zinc, manganese,
chromium, and more B vitamins such as B6, will help in avoiding
common deficiencies.
Our skin contains a high amount of zinc, but the concentration
of zinc is less compared to that present in organ tissues.
Nails, hair, and teeth also have some zinc content, and zinc is
very important for the development of tissuesZinc deficiency is
found to increase stress, burns, surgery, and weight loss.
Skin Zinc sources
Zinc is found in most of the animal foods. The main source of
zinc is Oysters. It has more zinc content nearly ten times than
the other sources. Oysters also have high copper content. Meat
contains high amount of Zinc since zinc is added to animal feeds
to increase their growth rates. Generally, Red meats (such as
beef, lamb, and pork) and liver have high content of zinc;
herring has good zinc composition, egg yolks and milk products
have considerable zinc content. Fish and poultry products also
contain high zinc contents. Usually, zinc in animal foods will
be better absorbed than that in the vegetable sources, but one
can reduce meat foods and eat whole grains and beans and still
they can get high zinc content. Overall, it is not that easy for
many people to eat a eating a comparatively healthy diet to
acquire the minimum requirement of 15 mg per day unless they
focus on zinc-containing foods.
