A single tetraglycine hydroperiodide tablet in a liter of water releases 8 mg of iodine which is enough for purifying one liter of water. The best thing to be used during traveling is in fact an iodine filter. Filters are compact, light, and easier to use than ever. A decent filter can be bought for less than a week's supply of Pepto-Bismol and antibiotics. The goal of a filter is to rid your drinking water of microscopic contaminants, rendering water clear and reasonably pure. How well your filter does this depends on the filter's pore size efficiency The two most popular and widely used iodine filters include First Need water filter and Katadyn pocket filter.

The First need water filter is cheap and is normally about 40$ its filter pores are about .4 micron which is small enough to protect from protozoan parasites but large enough for other small bacteria like E.coli to pass through. The First Need's charcoal canister is not big enough to be effective against poisonous chemicals -- you need a pound of charcoal for this -- so the charcoal just adds unnecessary weight, and provides a potential haven for the growth of harmful bacteria.

The Katadyn pocket filter is quite expensive about 180$ cost but is the most effective against all sorts of bacteria even small ones like E.coli. A better filter is determine by the size of the pores. smaller the pores better is the protection of water from harmful bacteria. Hence buy a better filter for a few dollars more otherwise if you expose your self to the risk of bacteria you might end up paying a fortune for the treatment.
