What are Cocktail Napkins ?

Napkins are basically used as a necessary item or thing during dinner. This has been followed from olden days even during the time of the Victorians. The napkins used to match the table cloth used. Now a days there are different varieties of napkins available in the market from the embroidered to lace edged linen ones. Paper napkins are also available for party uses. The napkins are generally available in two shapes one is the square and other is the rectangular but square is the most common, which is also suitable for fancy folds. A standard dinner napkin is available in twenty to thirty inch square and smaller than that are available as tea napkins.

Cocktail napkins are a smaller type of fabric napkin that is used only to collect the condensation from under the beverage glass. They are really not used at a place setting. Napkins are meant to be both practical and decorative. The standard size of a cocktail napkin is about five inch square and is easier to handle if the size is kept within six inch square. Cocktail napkins are generally made with wordings on it such as “Forgive me I have zinned”, “I love to cook with wine” etc. They are particularly available in a variety of colourful designs and patterns. They are used specially for holidays, special; occasions such as birthdays, graduations, weddings etc.

The accessories generally used in making hand crafts include deckle edge ruler, large acrylic ruler, sponge roller, rotary cutter, hole punch and sponge brush applicators.

Following is an example of a hand illustrated cocktail napkin.
The materials used for this are cocktail napkins, permanent fabric markers and masking tape.Usually these napkins are made up of a transparent linen material so that any solid black pattern can be easily traced on it. If that is not possible the napkin can be taped to a sunny window to create any design on it. The design is copied carefully so that it fits in the borders of the napkin. Different sizes are tried to see which fits the best. If the napkin consists of any creases on it should be washed and pressed to take it out if necessary. The design on the napkin is traced with a fabric marker. The dotted borders around them are stitched by starting from the middle of each side and moving towards the edges so that the dots are placed evenly. The napkins look better when it is filled with a single design. The design can be chosen from some clip art books.

 

Selecting a fabric for napkin also plays an important role while arranging them for a dinner or when used for special occasions. For a formal meal generally crisp, starched white damask linen is used. Damask is nothing but a rich, loom woven pattern seen in linen, wool or cotton silk. The name originally comes from the city Damascus where the fabric originated. For informal meals such as teas, picnics etc it is recommended to use paper napkins. Cotton napkins are not suitable for formal use however, they are durable fabric that can be used for daily use.

 

It is very important to arrange the napkins that are used for dinner or any parties. While dressing a table for a formal meal it is recommended to use a uniform set of white linen napkins. For casual gathering generally colours are mixed with different patterns. You can use lace edged napkins or embroidered napkins that gives a great look. When folding the napkins it should be dine according for different occasions or thins. If you are using a simple flower vase then a vertical folded napkin id best suited for it. If you are using a flower arrangement, then go for a simple napkin fold and never over do it. To make the guests feel special the napkins can be accompanied with napkin rings or ribbons and the napkins are sprinkled with scent like lavender, rose water, orange etc.
