What is a Cookie Cleaner ?
A cookie cleaner is software for
removing unwanted cookies from the hard disks.
History of the cookie cleaner
When cookies were designed and implemented into its browser in
1995, Netscape had not thought about cookie cleaners. Then
cookies used to be automatically enabled by default. It was soon
discovered that cookies were being used for invasive purposes
which precipitated the need for a cookie cleaner.
Evolution of the cookie cleaner
The initial cookie cleaning programs were simply built into the
utility programs as a bonus feature. They did not prevent
cookies from being set on the computer. Instead they just
deleted all cookies found on the hard drive at boot-up or
alternatively at shut down. This posed problems for users
because it led to useful cookies to be deleted alongwith
unwanted ones.
The cookie cleaners were soon
modified and the cookie cleaners had an image makeover to become
cookie managers exercising greater control over cookies. This
enabled users to preserve desirable cookies. The Cookie Crusher
brought put by the Limit Software was perhaps the most popular
cookie cleaner and manager. It not only cleaned cookies but also
prevented cookies from being placed on the computer.
