What is Water skiing ?
Water skiing is a popular sport in many countries, which are lucky to have a wide expanse of water like rivers, lakes, and bays that are not disturbed by waves. Many enjoy water skiing as a recreational activity.

History of Waterskiing
Water skiing is believed to have developed in 1922 by an 18 year old named Ralph Samuelson in Lake City, Minnesota on the Mississippi River. His contention that skis that can be used on snow can be used on water as well paid off in the long run. His first attempt on June 28, 1922 ended in failure but it spurred him on to discover an ingenious technique of using snow skis while being towed behind a motorboat powered by a converted Saxon truck engine. Later he bought two boards and used leather straps to lean backwards in the water with the ski tips slanted upwards. He held exhibitions around the State of Minnesota to display his new feat, which was soon to grow into a popular water sport.

Kinds of Water skis
Traditionally water skis were originally made of wood but the modern ones are of fibre glass an composites. The length is similar to the downhill snow skis but they are wider. They also have a rubber moulding where the skier can place his feet. The water skier is pulled along by a rope, with a handle fitted at one end and attached to a power boat at the other.

There is Barefoot Skiing without the aid of skiis called. In Barefoot Skiing, the skier’s feet serves as a platform to lift the skier out of the water. Hence the boat can pull the skier at great sppeds between 60 and 100 kilometers per hour.

Water Ski Racing is the fastest type of water skiing where water skiers race around a set course as in Formula One grand prix motor racing. A water ski race team consists of a boat driver, an observer and a skier. The driver tows the skier behind a powerboat and manipulates the speed according to the observer’s signals, which he gives by reading the skier. Water ski races differ according to the type of competition. It may be set over a specific distance ranging from one to many laps or a set period of time from a few minutes to over an hour.

Several new sports have emerged from the concept of water skiing. They are trick skiing which is performed using one or two short finless skis rather than the conventional gear. Ski jump is performed on two long skis similar to those that a beginner uses. Competitive Ski shows by ski clubs are also hugely popular. It usually involves spectacular stunts including swiveling, balletline and the popular pyramids.

There are organizations like the International Water Ski Federation which organizes World Championshis in water skiing.
