What are Vinyl Dolls ?

Vinyl dolls ushered in the unbreakable and soft dolls, giving a new lease of life to the doll industry. The vinyl dolls are made of vinyl which is used as a basic material for plastics.

History of vinyl dolls
Before the arrival of vinyl dolls, dolls were made of hard plastic. Although they were unbreakable, they were hard to touch and required wigs for hair. The doll manufacturers were searching for a better material to make play dolls when vinyl dolls entered the scene in the mid 1950s. It still remains the most preferred material for doll making.

Features of vinyl dolls
Vinyl dolls come in all sizes imaginable. They are popular because they are unbreakable, soft and pleasing to a child’s touch. For the manufacturer, they are lucrative since the cost of production is less compared to other dolls. Although the vast majority of dolls are made of soft vinyls, hard vinyls have also come into vogue for collector dolls in the past few years. They have rooted hair instead of the glued on wigs making it easy to comb and brush. They do not break or chip easily. They do not crack or split at the seams like hard plastic dolls.

Stability of vinyl dolls
There are doubts about the long-term stability of vinyl dolls. Although they are definitely more durable than the hard dolls, vinyl dolls still have their drawbacks. Hard vinyl tends to lose its color in course of time. Soft vinyl too is sometimes seen to undergo discoloration and darkening or turning yellow with age.

Companies That Produced Vinyl Dolls
Most of the major dolls manufacturing companies in the past 50 years have produced vinyl dolls, including Mattel, Ideal, Madame Alexander, Effanbee, and many others.

Collectible vinyl dolls
Vinyl dolls are good collectible items for the connoisseur. If you possess play dolls from the late 1950s through 1970s, preferably in their original packaging, then you can make a good fortune. For modern collector dolls, the market has not fully developed yet although they can be traded trade at healthy prices on online marketing sites like eBay and sometimes between collectors.
