Aggregate
Playoff: In this system, the players who are tied
have to play a series of extra holes, with the player with the
lowest total hole winning the game. In case the game is still
tied, it is decided by the sudden death. This is considered to
be a fair way of settling a game. However the drawback is that
it takes longer to complete the game.
18- Hole Playoff: This is
perhaps the oldest system of settling a game. In this format,
the players who are tied, return the next day and play another
18 holes. The player who has the lowest score wins. If it
happens to be a tie, then sudden death is played to decide the
winner. The major hassle of this system is the delay in
declaring the winner. The game extends to the next day with
players, spectators and television having to return for another
day. |

What
systems of golf playoff do major tournaments follow ?
The regular PGA tournaments and the Master’s tournament use the
system of sudden death to decide the winner. The British open
was the first tournament to follow the aggregate playoff where
the players play a series of four holes. In PGA tournaments the
competitors play 3 holes. The 18- hole play off used to be a
popular version with major tournaments like the British open,
PGA championships and the Master’s Tournament till the late
1970’s.However it is the deciding factor in the US Senior Open
and US Women’s Open, perhaps the only tournaments that continue
to use this age-old format.
