What is Martial Arts ?

Martial arts is a system of training for traditions and practices for fight. It includes strategies and fighting styles for combat, self-defence, sports and for mental discipline and self-confidence.

History of martial arts
Martial arts is considered to be a technique for self-defence. In the earlier days, most schools of martial arts developed as part of a military strategy. However, with the advent of technology-advanced weapons of fighting they were soon under the threat of becoming outmoded. It was now left to the old masters of martial arts to preserve it as an art form.

Martial arts is more than just learning the art of fighting. It symbolizes the passing on of a tradition from one generation to the other. The Chinese martial arts, for instance, teaches the art of traditional medicine like acupuncture, acupressure and so on. So also, traditional Indian medicine is taught through the Indian martial art forms.

How is martial arts taught ?
In Asian countries, martial art is taught in special schools through the teacher-disciple tradition. A master instructor supervises the students following a strict and disciplined approach. The students are expected to recite and follow the rules and training routines of the school. The master instructor is called sifu in Cantonese, shi fu in mandarin, kallari gurukkal in Malayalam (Indian language), asaan in Tamil (Indian language), achan in Thai, guru in Sanskrit, sa bum nim in Korean.
